The Connection Between Trauma and Addiction in Men

When you experience trauma, your brain’s stress-response system goes into overdrive. You’re stuck in fight-or-flight mode, always on high alert. 

This constant stress leads to changes in brain chemistry. You might feel anxious, depressed, or numb. That’s because your brain struggles to regulate dopamine (the feel-good chemical) and cortisol (the stress hormone). Without intervention, your brain starts searching for relief anywhere it can find it. And for a lot of men, substances like alcohol or drugs seem to offer the fastest fix.
