More About Serenity Park Recovery Center

Serenity Park has a rich history in the Little Rock recovery community and surrounding areas. Its Founder, Joseph “Joe” McQuany, started Serenity House in 1972. It was re-named Serenity Park upon moving to its current location, on Roosevelt Road. The property is located next to a jail and across the street from a cemetery. There is a sign that still stands today with three arrows pointing to each, that reads “locked up, covered up, sobered up” which McQuany believed, are the eventual options for those who suffer from alcoholism or addiction.

Serenity Park started in this new location in 1990. It provided 29 male treatment beds. Just months after McQuany passed on October 25, 2007, the brand new 20 bed Serenity Home for women center opened on the same campus. Serenity Park remained in operation until late 2013, when it sadly closed its doors. Joe McQuany’s footprint goes so much further than Serenity Park. Joe believed in the 12-step program and had a gift to teach what had so freely been given him. That, combined with his presence and sense of humor, made him electric in a crowd. Joe believed everyone had the right to world-class treatment and education about the disease of alcoholism and addiction.

Tara Tinnin purchased Serenity Park in late 2018. Having recently visited her hometown of Little Rock, Ms. Tinnin had a friend whose mother passed away from addiction. The sad truth was that the family struggled because her insurance would not allow her to leave the state for treatment. At the time, there were very few places providing quality treatment. Ms. Tinnin was already planning to move back to Little Rock and open a sober living home for women, as she had such an amazing experience in sober living after treatment herself. She found Serenity Park, toured the property, and was taken aback by the atmosphere of the place. After speaking with several friends and mentors, she felt compelled to take on this endeavor, and try and honor Joe McQuany’s legacy. Serenity Park Recovery Center opened its doors as a fully functioning 30-day residential treatment center with medication assisted detox in June of 2019. We reopened in the original women’s building with a 20 bed capacity. We have plans to reopen the old building, open beds for women, and house out-patient services as well. We will continue to honor Joe’s legacy, and the history of Serenity Park in all that we do.
